Check the VIN (free)
Call /local-exists/{vin}. exists tells you whether we have the vehicle; you also get its title, the auctions it was on and a photo.

Get the record (billed)
Call /local-report/{vin}. It returns the same vehicle object as /search-vin/{vin}, with every lot, and charges one report from your balance.

These VINs are free on /local-report, so you can build and test without spending. Click one to copy it.

Always start with /local-exists. When exists is false, do not call /local-report.
/local-report answers 404 with local data not found when there is nothing to return, and charges nothing.
402 insufficient funds means the balance is too low; 403 inactive service means Pay per VIN is not enabled for the key.
The response also carries balance and balance_usd after the charge.
